Allegory Interpretation

A possible interpretation for my allegory of the swimsuit and the underwear occurred to me today while wandering about. Considering the nature of an allegory there most certainly isn’t a single moral or interpretation, nor is there an intended moral or interpretation. Nevertheless, what follows is a possible one: Don’t mistake data for understanding.

ANIMA Program Notes

Pasted below are the program notes I wrote for this last weekend’s ECCE:ANIMA concert. Audience was packed in with standing-room only for both nights. Everybody involved did an outstanding job. Colleges and universities are typically designed to educate using the approach of specialty. As a result diversity is sometimes shortchanged, and communication between disciplines and departments on campus [...]

Creative Crop Rotation

This concept occurred to me because I recently burned out (well, . . . almost); I had reached the point where I faced my work and said, . . . “I’m all dried up.” It wasn’t that I didn’t have ideas; I just didn’t have the will to work. Pervasive boredom. Enthusiasm was lost. Wilted and [...]

Tall movies (and other dimensions too!)

I think most of us have experienced the frustration of shooting a film, and then, considering our familiarity with still cameras, try to turn the video camera on its side to change the orientation to a “portrait.” Alas. As we all know, that never works, and if we don’t catch ourselves before we get too [...]

The allegory of the swimsuit and the underwear

After a lengthy and somewhat baffling discussion in my ethnomusicology class about Albanian wedding music, I found myself dumbfounded, and seeking answers to my own questions. The dilemma I was facing was how to cope with the limiting perspective and extraordinarily useless insight that we are provided with by examining seemingly objective, quantifiable data. Sound confusing? By [...]

Moments of Intensity

I’ve been having and reflecting upon moments of intensity lately. These are moments where everything seems more vivid than usual, sounds are louder and crisper, colors are more vivid, and your sense of touch and emotional being is heightened. I frequently feel like this when I go walking after a long day of working in [...]

Scrabble — Kickin' it when it comes to advertising

Mattel has gone all out on their new commercials for Scrabble. It seems they’ve made a departure from the layman’s opinion of Scrabble being an outdated, esoteric board-game for middle-aged frumps, to be played post America’s Funniest Home Videos. Considering I’m such a sucker for good advertising (my wife makes fun of me for having [...]

The Secret to Raising Smart Kids

My brother, Dan Richards, sent me a link to an article recently published by Scientific American entitled “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids,” by Carol S. Dweck. The site’s summary of the article is a pretty good indication of its content. It reads as follows:       Many people assume that superior intelligence or ability is [...]

parallaxis—fEARnoMUSIC—collaboration

I visited Portland this weekend to see a show by the new music ensemble fEARnoMUSIC. The show was titled parallaxis, and was a concert of modern chamber music, each work being combined and presented simultaneously with the work of a collaborative video artist. Great concert. Featured on the program were a smattering of movements from [...]

Trees. Always trees. . .

I find that every time I sit down to write a piece of music my initial tendency is to think about . . . trees. That’s right, trees. I sit down with some manuscript paper in front of me, and all I can think of are trees. Big behemoths, leviathans of the land. Sprawling creatures [...]
